On July 31, 2009, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued the final rule for the fiscal year 2010 prospective payment system for skilled nursing facilities. These changes will change the way business is conducted. It will become crucial for rehabilitation departments to retain and obtain a significantly more in their therapist pool. Reimbursement for the rehabilitation department of a skilled nursing center will be directly tied to how fast a company can get therapists to evaluate an admitting patient. Companies who compete for skilled nursing contracts will need to increase coverage to include a full staff 7 days a week.
